The Graphic Foodie | Brighton Food Blog & Restaurant Reviews

Last week I spoke at Glug which is a really fantastic series of events for the creative industry. The format and venue changes each time but generally involves speakers in a really informal, welcoming environment. There is normally a bar (which seems pretty key too - it's Glug innit) and is great for catching up with old mates and meeting new people. Industry meet ups always seem so cringy in other sectors but this is far from the business card, handshakes and grey off the peg suit thing you would expect, trust me.

Although it started in London, there are now six other cities in the UK and abroad that have regular events and our Brighton ones are well hosted by design agency Crush and illustration Agency Rush.

The event last week was at The Sallis Benny Theatre, a place I hadn't been back to since my university days an eye-watering aaaaaaaaaggggggeeee ago. The theme this time was "Passion" with speakers from the design industry who have branched out and followed another path instead or alongside their day job.

The talks were brilliant actually, with Adam Kemény and his Photobot business (a photobooth completely out of the ordinary and a fantastic start-up story to boot) and Matt Sewell, the "Banksy of the bird world" (yes really).

To be honest I've never spoken to a large audience like this, certainly not in a bona fide auditorium and certainly not 8.5 months pregnant with my lung capacity at like 20% either. By hey, I wheezed my way through it and it was pretty good fun. As you can imagine, pizza featured quite heavily (what, no really?) as well as how and why I started the blog and where it has led me to today, in a completely unforecasted twist actually - one that I couldn't really say much at the event or here yet either!

Still, the feedback was great (as well as all the tweets and emails I received - thanks!) and even managed to wangle someone a table at a packed out restaurant that night. I like to be useful at least.

Afterwards they showed the incredible film The Man Whose Mind Exploded by Toby Amies - a touching documentary of local Brighton resident Drako Oho Zarhazar, an eclectic man (understatement) in his 70s who suffers shocking memory loss after a series of accidents. I loved it, especially the relationship that formed between Drako and Toby over the course of four years filming. Check it out if you can.

I was lucky enough to be included in a blogger's recipe book for House of Fraser published at the end of 2014. I had a hard time choosing from my recipes but finally decided on my beetroot gnocchi with goats cheese, peas, watercress and walnuts. It's pretty photogenic but also everyone who I've tested it out on (including 3 year old Foodie) loves it.

Anyway, I'm really pleased to be part of the book (more so as I'm the first recipe!). Although I have written for quite a lot of online publications and I have featured in print before in places like Olive Magazine and the Times, it's nice to be featured in a real, live, physical cookbook that I hope people will find helpful.

The book also features 14 bloggers and a range of recipes from Rosemary Red Wine Pears to Blueberry and Coconut Crunch Cake so pick up a copy if you can!

I'm BACK! Not bigger (still rocking at 5'1) but better for sure. It's been nice to step back for a bit and refocus and I think I've got the breather I needed for more balance round these digital parts.

But I haven't been eating delivery pizza (the horror) or foraging out of cornflake packets in the larder whilst away (I may, may have eaten Nutella straight out the jar). Here's what I've been up to this month in pictures:

  1. Typical. I won a Twitter competition the day after I stated my break. Thanks to my Twitter buddies who let me know I'd won and to Shine for the amazing new cut!
  2. I'm collaborating with the fabulous Style Memos blog to give you a series of Brighton Lux Lunches because we all deserve a bit of a treat.
  3. My Elderflower cordial recipe (without citric acid) at this time of year is massively popular, number 1 on Google in fact! But this year I made rocketfuel my first batch of Elderflower Champagne. I'm praying it's not going to explode on me.
  4. Amazing. I ate Italian food in Brighton! And I loved it. More soon.
  5. One of the best meals I had this month was at Curryleaf Cafe. So good I went back for lunch and dinner.
  6. I cooked a lot. This batch of ricotta gnocchi using actual Sorrento lemons was a highlight.
  7. My review copy of Antonio Carluccio's Pasta book arrived which I'm very excited to be diving into.
  8. I took Mr GF to Burger Brothers which reminded me it's the best burger in Brighton hands down. THERE I SAID IT.
  9. I attended a really interesting (and rather decadent) oyster day at English's, one of Brighton's oldest restaurants. I'm sharing this corker with you soon.
  10. My family came over from Italy (the first time in 30 odd years) and brought me some goodies like bread from the village bakery, a caciocavallo cheese and some local torrone.
  11. I've been playing with a few new OXO Good Grips products and have created a few new recipes, plus I've got a fantastic competition coming up too.
  12. Vacation time and I got a temporary new kitchen to play with. It had bling sparkly worktops and Plumen lights. Sadly one of those awful ceramic electric hobs as well though. The lovely outside cooking area made up for it!
  13. These are some prized, DOP protected yellow figs filled with pistachio cream and covered in chocolate from a new Italian online retailer I'll be writing about.
As for this blog, I've decided to be far more choosy about what to post about. Although I'll continue sharing my own discoveries, and I already turn down a lot of things I've been invited to or sent to review, I'm going to be even more select. The night I found myself being blindfolded and fed dire food as part of a PR event was the cold, hard slap in the face I needed. Time is precious.

Instead, I will be focusing on what I am passionate about, firstly the best of the best of dining in Brighton. I'm more at home in a decent, quality restaurants than I ever will be following the fads, gimmicks and fast foods. Only if it is truly exceptional, different or particularly interesting I'll let you know, otherwise you can go find sandwiches and cronutadoodledoos all by yourselves I'm sure.

I'll also be getting back in the kitchen creating recipes. Whilst I do like to be cooked for, I like to create and craft as well. My appetite for learning is back and really I think you can only appreciate food by honing those skills, knowing the techniques and how food gets to your plate.

There are quite a lot of posts I have ready to dispatch in the next few weeks but going forward, there will be less posts but more quality.

Sometimes a little break is just what is needed.

I've decided to take the whole of June off blogging and more importantly, all social media channels. No more laptop eyes at 2am, checking that phone once too often and teetering off into the evening to food events left right and centre. I'm even deleting all desktop and mobile apps like an addict that needs all temptation removed. A social media detox that I need to sweat out if you like.

Social media has enriched modern lives in many ways. I've connected with so many interesting people through it, people that lighten my day, inform and entertain me. Some I'll now even consider to be personal friends. The other side is that it's an unbelievable drain of time, leading to lack of focus and distraction.

As for this blogging lark, there can be a little too much pressure for something that stated as a hobby and should be an enjoyment rather than a chore. This blog is lighthearted, real and fun and what people tell me they like about it. So I intend to keep it that way and stepping back for a short time is often just the ticket to reset the balance and get that positive energy back that drove me to start this blog, ooooh six years ago now. The last couple of months have been particularly busy with events and I've just completed a pretty major project at my day job too. Awesome, fabulous, love it, but full on.

So instead, I'll be taking lunch breaks and spending the time I do have at home, REALLY at home, with my darling little family. Because really, there are far more important things in life than needing to photograph every meal you eat. What really? Yes really!

Anyway, whateverthehell, I'm really looking forward to it. See you in July kids, don't eat anything I wouldn't.

Thanks for reading and supporting the blog this far.

GF x

Many of you read this blog through a feed reader, but if you go direct to the site you may notice I've redesigned the site!

Although the design, illustrations and logo have been refreshed (as well as on all my social media pages) there are a few other changes to the functionality.

Most importantly, the site is now responsive, so it will adapt for desktop, mobile and tablet platforms. I noticed more visitors were using mobile devices to browse the site, and although desktop is still the most popular platform, I can only imagine this will change in the not too distant future.

I've added all my favourite Brighton food spots, aka my Black Book, to a Pinterest Places Map so you can find the best restaurant closest to you or find it helpful in planning your visit.

The sidebar will have direct links to my most popular guides like the Black Book or my guide for Kid's Menus in Brighton. All of these will be continuously updated with new finds and information and there will be more guides coming in the future.

I have improved the navigational menu and search facility so you should be able to find what your looking for more easily.

Anyway, I hope you like the new look, it's been hard going as I've done quite a bit of the coding myself (something I've wanted to learn for ages, wanna-be geek much?) and there have been quite a few 3am finishes. One of the hardest things for any designer is designing something for themselves, you can nit-pick details for days, months, hell...years even. Plus after nine hours at my designing day job and juggling motherhood, sometimes I just want to sit on the sofa, open the wine and watch some dreadful, brain-emptying television. Dinner Date, I'm looking at you.

If you have any comments, suggestions or find any bugs (gasp!) then leave me a message in the comments, but really, thanks for reading the blog and hope the face-lift makes your visit more enjoyable.

I've been meaning to do a "Best of Brighton" post for a while now, with my handful of favourite spots I go back to again and again. One of those many things on my to-do that I needed a kick up the butt to get done. Anyway, an interview with listings site WOW247 was indeed just that so have a read here: www.wow247.co.uk/blog

There is even a little map so, I dunno, do a crawl of the places which would be my idea of heaven, although I would strongly suggest wearing elasticated waistbands and actioning over a few days.

View Brighton dining in a larger map

My little black book for Brighton eating and drinking features:

The Chilli Pickle
Sam’s of Brighton
The Gingerman Group
Plateau
The Little Fish Market Restaurant
Riddle & Finns
Julien Plumart Salon du The
Iydea
Terre a Terre
Boho Gelato
Ridgeview Wines (Grosvenor Blanc De Blancs)

This year has gone by so fast I feel I haven't caught my breath. This time last year I was waddling around, a stone and a half heavier, and pretty much resigned to the sofa with a stash of tasteless rom-coms and chocolates. Christmas was pretty much cancelled as in my heavily pregnant state I wasn't in the mood to host a big dinner.

So much has happened and life has sure as hell changed beyond all recognition. Cocktails, late nights and beautifully unsuitable footwear have been traded in for strong coffee and playdates (I still wear beautifully unsuitable footwear and the last year has pretty much been one big all-nighter, albeit of the non-fun kind).

Life is slowly returning back to some sort of normal, I'm going back to work straight after Christmas (finding my brain again is on the to-do list) and although a little apprehensive and sad to not be running after my little boy 24/7, it will be nice to have a bit of the old me back. And this Christmas, our dining table will be full of family again (including the newest addition!).

Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, I hope you have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you so much for reading this little blog, especially for the die hards who have stuck with me despite my little blog break this year, I promise the new year will be filled with more recipes, reviews and food design finds and for those interested, you can follow my Baby Foodie blog with recipes and finds for little ones and family friendly local reviews.

Lots of love, eat, rejoice and all that sort of good stuff. Hope you all get what you want for Christmas (If you're reading this Santa, I just want sleep. Lots and lots of sleep.)

Fxxx

Well motherhood has sure given me even more to talk about. Baby, baby, baby, blah, blah, blah. I've decided to set up a new blog which will have the same ethos as The Graphic Foodie but will be kept separate to save the sanity of my non baby interested readers. Seriously, baby talk would bore the ever living daylights out of me pre-baby, so totes understand.

For those that are interested and would like weaning recipes, book and product reviews, baby friendly restaurant reviews and some baby related design thrown into the mix, visit: thebabyfoodie.blogspot.co.uk

Hello strangers! I'm back, well kind of. Motherhood is sure as heck hard graft and 6 month old baby Foodie is anything but an easygoing, snoozy baby - he's an absolute hell raiser! Still, he has a killer giggle and eats pasta like a seasoned Italian.

Although I don't quite have the time to write full reviews, I'm probably eating out more than usual (essentially being a lady-wot-lunches whilst on leave) so to keep up my local recommendations I'll be posting short but sweet reviews with less of the big intros and funny bits (yes, yes, my posts did have funny bits in).

I'm also getting back in the kitchen, albeit for quick meals for the time being but am proud to state that during this whole mad experience, not a single microwave meal has passed the threshold. No matter how tired or time poor this household gets we always make time to eat, even if it is spaghetti cacio e pepe for the third night running! So if I come up with anything worthwhile (usually some wizardry with two store cupboard ingredients as I haven't had time to do the food shop for a fortnight) I'll be sure to post it up.

It's good to be back and regaining some sort of normality. And if anyone has any tips on how to get a stubborn baby to sleep, do get in touch PLEASE!

Just to let you know I'll be having a blog break for a little while to join the booming Brighton yummy mummy brigade. With lots to learn, motherhood is a bit of a shocker but normal service will resume when possible (as well as sleeping at night I hope).

Best thing is that The Graphic Foodie household has another mouth to feed!

On a side note I unfortunately had to have 4 nights in hospital. The aftercare was fantastic and god bless NHS midwives, staff and doctors but hospital food is worse than I ever imagined, mainly due to the fact it is made in Wales then shipped over to Brighton and reheated within an inch of its life. Nonsense. Thanks to (grand)mamma Foodie for coming in with brodo and tortellini, frittata and aubergine parmigiana to make me feel better. Mammas rock.

I'm a saddo. I am. I really like planning my meals for the week mainly as I live for my stomach and like to look forward to dinners, but also because this way I also save an incredible amount of time and money. Both of which I'm frequently short of. I also get a ridiculous amount of OCD pleasure chalking up the menu on my kitchen board.

I've never really thought about popping up a record of them on the blog but when friends come round, it is always noticed and commented on. Well, mainly nasty comments about my mental state but there we go.

Last week was actually a pretty good eating week.

Minestrone usually is the user-upper meal of choice and this time had a nice slab of leftover smoked pork loin thrown in. This is my base recipe, but to this one I threw in a handful of small tube pasta. The chicken liver salad is a new thing for me, but will be making a comeback as it was lush. The salad dressing was made by adding red wine vinegar to the frying pan used to cook the livers. On the occasions that I let Mr. Graphic Foodie in my the kitchen I'm often rewarded greatly, this Thursday he made his legendary ratatouille. Friday's lemon cod served with wilted spinach, lemon and chickpea is a particular favourite, a life without chickpeas is not worth living in my book.

The weekend was spent eating at friends and family, hence the space!

So here we have it. A new Graphic Foodie blog series. I'll always do a week in arrears as changes happen. If there is anything particularly spectacular, I'll post a recipe. Right. Off to chalk up next week!

Graphic Foodie has just turned one!

It's a funny old thing this blogging malarkey. I started it as a silly little side line to keep a few of my recipes in one place rather than on paper scraps and napkin edges, whilst learning a bit about social media for my design job.

At first I was writing to a brick wall and often wondered why I was doing it, but slowly and surely comments came. People started to send me nice emails and would actually ask my advice. Some people challenged my opinions and those I appreciated the most (hello to all the animal rights activists out there!)

One year on and I have published 124 posts, have 919 people following me on Twitter, lighting rigged up in my kitchen and a head full of ideas. I sometimes eat my food a bit cold because I'm photographing it and my fella gets really annoyed with me. I sometimes introduce myself as Fran Graphic Foodie. My friends have stopped inviting me round for dinner. I get edgy if I'm away from blogging for a bit.

I've always lived to eat rather than eating to live, and it was always the case that if I wasn't eating or cooking food I was talking about it, but never did I think it would consume my life as much as it does in blog format. But despite a crazy house renovation, planning my wedding in Italy and a busy job, I somehow always make time for the blog.

But the best thing about starting a blog is discovering the food blogging community out there. Reading other peoples blogs, Twitter, Ning and other online resources have connected me to an enormous, passionate foodie community and a wealth of food knowledge. The foodie twitterati have on many occasion saved my bacon, lumpy sauces, pizza stone issues and taught me more than I ever needed to know about pigs trotters, retro cocktails and pies. Their enthusiasm is infectious and I think quite key into why people keep blogging. And it's been lovely to have met some of them in the real world.

I hope the next year sees the blog evolve a bit. I feel I'm starting to find my blogging feet and I can begin to focus on what this blog is exactly. But I think it should always be fun.

Mille grazie for reading and happy new year.

Fran x

Howdy do.

I'm a Brighton based graphic designer with an Italian background meaning I am passionate (read argumentative) about everything from design, squirrels, Fiat 500's and in particular food.

Don't get me started on cheap mince, pre-packed meals, Delia Smith's shortcuts to cooking or the wrongness of Spaghetti Bolognese (and oh my, people who call it "Spag Bol"). I think good food is the backbone of a good life and being Italian means that I spend a lot of time at the table with my family eating, discussing what is to be eaten next or arguing about how best to prepare this, that or the other.

Having grown up with the privilege of great home cooking (thanks mum!), home grown and reared ingredients all served up with a huge side order of love, it would be impossible for me not to feel as I do.

People who say that they don't have time to cook and fuel themselves with the garbage that is convenience food are alien to me. Some of the best meals I have had have been whipped up in 15 minutes with the three remaining ingredients in the cupboard - it takes longer for take away to arrive people! On the other hand, I think fine dining should be left to the professionals - I don't want my friends waiting hungry at the table while I flambé individual strips of citrus rind á la Gary Rhodes. My food is about rustic passion, instinct and above all enjoyment.

I want to share some recipes, cooking disasters, local food finds and champion food heros.

So, what is this blog about apart from food?

Restaurant reviews: Oh I'm a critical one. If you go out to dinner and pay over £15 for a main it has got to be better than what you can prepare at home, no? Always with an eye out for the details of the design and interior aspect of restaurants I have seen some genius and some downright dirty.

Design: I get totally excited by great design. Clever design. Design that makes you wince that you did not come up with the impossibly simple but genius ideas yourself.

Ciao!
